Lung Volume Reduction Surgery

We are proud to be one of the nation’s first Joint Commission-certified centers for lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). Our LVRS program was awarded this Certificate of Distinction by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for safety and quality of care.

The Joint Commission certification is an important validation of our high-quality comprehensive clinical care for individuals with severe emphysema who are being considered for this major surgical procedure. The Temple LVRS program has evaluated over 600 patients since 2004, and our surgeons have performed over 125 lung volume reduction procedures since 1996.

The award is noteworthy because Medicare administrators have announced that beginning soon only patients at Joint Commission-certified LVRS programs will be eligible for reimbursement. Private insurers and Medicaid programs often follow Medicare's lead. This means that you can continue referring patients who are LVRS candidates to the Temple Lung Center with the extra assurance of safety and quality clinical care that comes with high volumes of patients, adherence to up-to-date standards, and documented clinical outcomes.

Temple now has one of the largest LVRS referral networks in the nation (over 60 practices and 220 referring physicians).
