Description: Determine the effectiveness of long term, 24-hour continuous oxygen therapy in COPD patient with moderate hypoxemia at rest
Inclusion Criteria: COPD; >10 pack-year smoking history; >40 years; post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC < 0.70, FEV1 ² 65%; oxygen saturation 89-93% at rest
Duration: 4 years

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
A history of ground-breaking research
- Performed first prospective randomized trial of lung volume reduction surgery1 and helped lead National Emphysema Treatment Trial comparing LVRS with standard medical care2
- Developed first registry-based description of outcomes in pulmonary hypertension3
- Chosen by Medicare as one of only three U.S. sites to test the value of specialized care for mechanically ventilated patients
- Performed first investigation of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency4
- Over 15 years, completed >25 studies testing new therapies for COPD and published hundreds of peer-reviewed articles on pulmonary disease
One of the most active and innovative research programs in the nation
- Participating in or leading over a dozen COPD trials, including testing of less invasive procedures, steroids, and bronchodilators as well as novel anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and vaccines
- Member of NHLBI COPD Clinical Research Network
- Leading several clinical trials of novel agents in pulmonary hypertension
- Coordinating Pennsylvania Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis State Registry
- Coordinating Mid-Atlantic states in 6-year NIH study of supplemental oxygen therapy (LOTT) for moderate COPD
- Leading major Pennsylvania-wide study evaluating best methods to prevent full-blown COPD exacerbations (PA-SCOPE)
- Participating in largest study of COPD ever undertaken—aimed at determining genetic and other underlying causes of COPD (COPD-Gene)
- At the Spring 2007 meeting of the American Thoracic Society, Temple clinicians presented over 20 abstracts on COPD, lung transplantation, or LVRS
