Sleep Disorders and Apnea
As awareness of sleep disorders has increased—obstructive sleep apnea is now known to be as common as asthma—so has the need for careful evaluation of sleep disturbances. The Temple Sleep Disorders Program, staffed by board-certified sleep specialists from the Temple Lung Center, is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of sleep disturbances. These frequently include: excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, loud snoring, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, male impotency, and nocturnal seizures.
In addition to aiding in diagnosis, the Sleep Disorders Program regularly assists with patients requiring special non-invasive ventilatory needs. The Sleep center features a daytime CPAP desensitization and mask fit clinic, demand CPAP for central apea patients and tailored BiPAP ventilation strategies or drug therapy for obese patients. We also perform preoperative risk evaluation and modification for patients considering bariatric surgery.
The Sleep Disorders Laboratory
If a full sleep study is needed, the Temple Lung Center maintains a special laboratory with several private rooms designed for continuous observational and physiological monitoring of the patient (eg, brain wave activity, eye movements, breathing, snoring, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, muscle activity) in a comfortable private bedroom-type setting. Temple performs over 2,000 such studies every year. Special daytime studies are also available to diagnose narcolepsy.
