How is emphysema diagnosed?
Emphysema is diagnosed by a physical examination and tests such as chest x-ray, pulmonary function test and arterial blood gases. Individual with emphysema may have barrel-shaped chests.
How is emphysema treated?
Smoking cessation is the most important and effective treatment. Only quitting smoking can stop the progression of lung damage once it has started. Medications may be used to improve breathing: bronchodilators, diuretics, and corticosteroids. Vaccines against the flu and pneumonia are recommended for people with emphysema. Respiratory infections may be treated with antibiotics.
Low-flow oxygen can be used during exertion, continuously, or at night. Pulmonary rehabilitation can improve exercise tolerance and quality of life in the short-term. Lung transplantation is an option for patients with severe disease.
Carefully selected patients may be eligible for lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS), in which the parts of the lung most damaged by disease are removed. This procedure allows the normal portions of the lung to expand more fully and take advantage of increased aeration.
How can I reduce my chances of developing emphysema?
To reduce the chances of developing emphysema, quit smoking.
